Orvieto stands in a panoramic location above an imposing tuff stone crag (a type of rock consisting of consolidated volcanic ash ejected from vents during a volcanic eruption), rising overhead the vertical cliffs that are extended by defensive walls of the same stone. The extraordinary cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art, features spires, cusps, bas-reliefs and golden mosaics on its facade; it is home to important masterworks of frescoes.

A short 30-minute drive to Civita di Bagnoregio, a small ancient village founded by the Etruscans on a hill of tuff stone that clings to the precipice of the steep hill it sits on. A small island in an eerie sea of uninhabitable landscape, that can be reached only by a footbridge suspended in the air. Views of Civita from the valley are incredibly picturesque. It is actually a dying city, destined to disappear one day due to erosion.
